COURSE OFFERINGS

ANTI-RACISM & ANTI-BLACKNESS 201

The purpose of this course is to build knowledge around anti-oppression and anti-racism by learning from history, analyzing the ways in which we are each complicit, and building a strong foundation to continue to work towards further growth as anti-racist and anti-oppression. This course will function in part as a lecture but most importantly as a Socratic seminar in which we learn from and grow with each other in an open and honest environment. The discussions will be scaffolded with texts that I will make available for all who take the course with some exceptions and at points documentaries or videos. These text and supplemental materials will provide us with the tools to have a conversation in which the end result is growth. The growth in this course will be uncomfortable and it is that discomfort that we must tackle, sit with, and learn how to grow through not around.

This course is the next step. For those taking this course, you already have a basic understanding of the complexities of anti-blackness and race--this course goes the next step. This course is about how to be an accomplice to the Black freedom struggle by divesting from your own whiteness or non-black privilege. This course is reading and action intensive designed so that you are practicing the every day of what it looks like to use your privilege as currency--and how to build up Black movements. This class will draw on anti-colonial scholarship, critical race theory, and a lot of Black scholars that range from afro-pessimist to separationist, to those who study domination and oppression.

You will be uncomfortable. If not, then I am not doing my job of facilitating the unlearning of whitenesss--this class works through our continued practice of holding each other accountable, pushing each other, and being honest and ready to sit in our discomfort. I am not an expert.

This course is meant for those who feel that they are beginners in learning about how to be an anti-racist rather than the liberal approach to race & diversity. This course is not a course on how to be an ally but rather of how to work towards being an accomplice in the fight for liberation for Black people. As my life experience and scholarship is around Blackness studies this class will center its focus on unpacking anti-blackness as a route to building anti-racist stamina and discourse.
